GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $3.8 MILLION FOR MĀNOA PUBLIC LIBRARY EXPANSION
$600,000 Released for Temporary Library at Noelani Elementary School
For Immediate Release: December 18, 2007
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $3.8 million in design and construction funds for the expansion of Mānoa Public Library.
“Mānoa Public Library is frequented by residents of all ages,” said Governor Lingle. “In keeping with our Administration’s commitment to lifelong education, this project will ensure that Mānoa’s library users have a larger and more comfortable space in which to read and study, as well as access to expanded programs and a wider array of resources.”
The current library will be demolished as part of this project, and a new facility will be built on the same site featuring basement parking and more floor space to accommodate an expanded library collection. The library will also provide a larger work area for staff and space for a separate children’s room and meeting room.
In an effort to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, sustainable design features are being incorporated into the new library’s design. LEED standards are intended to reduce a building’s environmental impact, as well as its operation and maintenance costs.
Governor Lingle released $6.5 million for this project in 2005. The total project cost is estimated at $10.3 million. Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in March 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2008 and be completed in November 2010.
In order to continue library services to the Mānoa community during construction, Governor Lingle also released $600,000 to build a temporary public library at Noelani Elementary School.
The interim library will primarily house new books, children’s books and DVDs. Construction is scheduled to be completed in September 2008.
