GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $1,005,000 FOR PARKING LOT EXPANSION AT KAHULUI AIRPORT

For Immediate Release:  December 19, 2007

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $1,005,000 in design funds for the expansion of Kahului Airport’s parking lot. This project will add approximately 1,800 parking stalls, which would increase parking capacity to more than 3,800 spaces.

“My Administration is working to address the shortage of parking at several of Hawai‘i’s airports as part of our 12-year, $2.3 billion airports modernization plan,” said Governor Lingle. “This specific project will provide a parking solution for our residents and visitors at Kahului Airport.”

Plans are currently underway to construct a new access road to Kahului Airport, which will open up space needed for the parking lot expansion to be built. The goal is to coordinate the timing of the two projects so that construction on the expanded lot can begin as soon as this space becomes available.

Design for this project is scheduled to begin this month and be completed in September 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2009 and be completed within the year.
