GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $1 MILLION FOR KALEPA VILLAGE RENTAL APARTMENTS ON KAUA‘I

For Immediate Release:  December 21, 2007

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $1 million in construction funds for the final phase of affordable housing rental units at Kalepa Village in Hanamā‘ulu. The funds will be used to construct 40 new units, ranging in size from one to three bedrooms.

“Our Administration continues to make progress in improving Hawai‘i’s affordable housing inventory, thanks to a shared commitment on the part of public and private partners,” said Governor Lingle. “I commend Mayor Baptiste and Kaua‘i County for seeing this important project through to completion and for working actively to stabilize the housing market on Kaua‘i. Partnerships like this with the counties are driving the success of affordable housing solutions in our state.”

“I am pleased that the people of Kaua‘i will benefit from the collaboration between government and private entities on Kalepa Village and other affordable housing projects,” said Mayor Bryan Baptiste. “Providing permanent affordable units for our residents has always been a top priority for us. We thank Governor Lingle and all of our partners for sharing this vision.”

Kaua‘i County acquired the Kalepa Village project site in 1994. The first phase was completed in 1997 and delivered 60 rental units and a multi-purpose building. The second phase of 40 rental units was completed in 2004. Construction of the third phase is scheduled to be completed in March 2008 and will provide 40 rental units. The fourth and final phase will bring the total number of affordable units at Kalepa Village to 180.

Other construction financing for phase 4 will be provided by a combination of funding sources, including the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2008 and be completed in November 2008.
