Governor Hosts International Journalists at State Capitol
Governor Lingle welcomed journalists from the Asia-Pacific region to Hawai`i as part of the Spring 2009 Jefferson Fellowship Program. The Fellowship program provides U.S. and Asia-Pacific journalists with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Asia-Pacific issues and hold dialogues with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center.

As a former journalist, the Governor discussed her educational background and shared that it allows her to respect an open media in a democratic society.
Governor Lingle also shared her assessment of the impact of the global financial crisis on Hawai`i.
Established in 1967, the Jefferson Fellowship program is the East-West Center's oldest seminar program. Its purpose is to promote public understanding of cultures, issues and trends in the Asia-Pacific region through the news media.
The journalists participating in the Spring 2009 program represented respected news agencies including 60 Minutes and Newsweek from the United States, as well as international publications including The Economic Times (New Delhi), Tempo Weekly News Magazine (Jakarta) and The Nation (Bangkok).
The fellowship participants will spend five days in Honolulu, followed by a 16-day study tour to Tokyo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
