Clean Energy
In January 2008, Hawai‘i entered into an unprecedented partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy called the Hawai`i Clean Energy Initiative, with an ambitious target of using renewable resources to supply 70 percent or more of Hawai‘i’s energy needs by 2030. Since then, the state and its federal, utility, private and regulatory partners have made tremendous progress in reducing Hawai‘i’s dependence on imported oil and creating a clean energy model for other states and nations.
A portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is dedicated to funding clean energy projects that will reduce utility bills for households and businesses and create more “green” jobs. These funds will build on our ongoing efforts in Hawai‘i to attract private investment in renewable energy, help stop the flow of money out of our state to purchase foreign oil, and establish a more secure energy future for Hawai‘i.
