Historic "Washington Place"

Across the street from the State Capitol on Beretania Street is Washington Place, former home to a dozen of Hawai`i’s governors. Queen Lili`uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, also lived in this residence.

Captain John Dominis, a wealthy trader, built Washington Place. King Kamehemeha III later named Washington Place after the first President of the United States.

In an effort to return Washington Place to the people of Hawai`i, a second structure was constructed with private funds in 2001. The Governor’s new residence is a 5,000-square-foot home on the same plot of land as Washington Place. Governor Lingle is the first governor to reside in the new house.  The original Washington Place is now a museum for visitors wishing to learn more about the history of the state.
