GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $705,000 FOR DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS ON KAUA`I

Immediate Release:  January 31, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $705,000 to construct drainage improvements on Kūhiō Highway on Kaua‘i near mile marker 18.3, between Anahola and Kīlauea on the northeast side of the island.

During heavy rainfalls, ground water in this area seeps onto the roadway creating large puddles that are a potential hazard for motorists. This project will construct underground drains along both shoulders of the road to drain the water away from this section of the highway.

“This is one of several projects the Department of Transportation has undertaken to correct drainage problems along state roadways to reduce the risk of accidents,” said Governor Lingle. “Kūhiō Highway will be safer as a result of these improvements.”

The total project cost is estimated at $805,000, which includes $100,000 previously released by Governor Lingle for design. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2008 and be completed in August 2008.
