State Opens Long-Awaited H-1 Freeway North-South Road Interchange
As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's commitment to improving Hawai`i's transportation infrastructure, Governor Lingle joined the state Department of Transportation (DOT) and contractor Kiewit Pacific Co. at a ceremony this week to open the H-1 Freeway North-South Road Interchange.
Energy Conservation Program to Lower Costs, Decrease Dependence on Oil
Building on the Lingle-Aiona Administration's efforts to lead by example in the pursuit of a clean energy future for Hawai`i, Governor Lingle and State Comptroller Russ Saito announced a new project that focuses on energy efficiency improvements to 10 State office buildings within the State Capital District, including the State Capitol, that comprise over 1.3 million square feet of building space.

"Stop Flu at School" Vaccination Clinics Begin
Governor Lingle joined the Department of Health in kicking off the school-based vaccination program, "Protect Hawai`i's Keiki: Stop Flu at School." Now in its third year, the program offers free seasonal flu vaccine to thousands of Hawai`i elementary and middle school students.
Collaboration Helps Restore Endangered Hawaiian Birds
Twelve endangered birds were released into the forest of Kaua`i this week, a milestone in the conservation of native Hawaiian birds. Through collaboration of private and government organizations, the puaiohi, or small Kaua`i thrush, has been captive-bred and released annually into the forests of Kaua`i for the last 10 years.
Governor's Awards Honor Top State Employees
Governor Lingle and Chief of Staff Barry Fukunaga honored state employees for their work to improve the quality of life for Hawai`i residents during the annual Governor's Awards Ceremony. This year, 17 team nominees, 12 manager nominees and 18 employee nominees competed to be selected as the State Team of the Year, Manager of the Year and Employee of the Year, respectively.
2009 Novel H1N1 Influenza Inoculations Available in Hawai`i
The Hawai`i State Department of Health (DOH) has announced that the inoculation (shot) version of the 2009 H1N1 Influenza vaccine has arrived in Hawai`i. Last week, Hawai`i was allocated 6,700 doses of injectable MIV (monovalent inactivated vaccine) by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
New International Arrivals Corridor Opens at Honolulu International Airport
Moving forward on the Lingle-Aiona Administration's 12-year, $2.3 billion Airports Modernization Plan, transportation and tourism leaders dedicated the first phase of the new International Arrivals Corridor at the Honolulu International Airport. The corridor, located on the third level of the `Ewa Concourse, provides an easy, secure route to the Federal Inspection Services area for 30 to 40 percent of arriving international passengers.

"Day on the Farm" Promotes Awareness
Governor Lingle and Sandra Lee Kunimoto, director of the Department of Agriculture joined Hawai`i Kai residents at "A Day on the Farm," an event dedicated to supporting farmers in the Kamilonui Valley. The event provided the community with an opportunity to learn about current challenges facing farmers, the importance of Hawai`i Kai's watershed and the dangers of the loss of agricultural land due to overdevelopment.

Governor Testifies in Support of Maui Agricultural Land, Jobs
Governor Lingle attended a meeting of the Commission on Water Resource Management to testify in support of preserving nearly 35,000 acres of agricultural land on Maui and protecting the jobs of more than 800 workers and their families who depend on water for their livelihoods.

As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's continuing efforts to protect Hawai`i residents against the spread of seasonal and H1N1 influenza, the Department of Health (DOH) kicked off the school-based vaccination program, "Protect Hawai`i's Keiki: Stop Flu at School" and announced the arrival of the H1N1 influenza vaccine this week.

Maintaining Quality Public Service During Budget Crisis
Following the ratification by Hawai`i Government Employees Association (HGEA) members of a new two-year contract, Governor Lingle announced details of a plan that calls for two furlough days per month for the next 20 months for state employees. To minimize the impact on the public, most state offices will close all or portions of their operations on two specified Fridays per month.

School-Based H1N1 Vaccination Clinics Starting in November
The State Department of Health (DOH) announced this week that participating schools have begun sending home parental consent forms for upcoming H1N1 vaccination clinics. The free, voluntary program is being offered to students in Kindergarten through 8th grades statewide. Consent forms are due back to schools by October 30.
Admiral Willard Assumes Command of U.S. Pacific Command
Governor Lingle attended a change of command ceremony during which Admiral Robert Willard assumed command of U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) from Admiral Timothy Keating. Admiral Willard previously served as commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet from May 2007 – September 2009.

Public Hearings to Discuss Proposed Amendments
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is inviting the public to attend a series of statewide public hearings during the first two weeks of November on proposed amendments to rules for state parks, boating and ocean recreation facilities, and forestry and wildlife areas.
Hawaiian Airlines Marks 80 Years of Connecting Residents, Visitors
Governor Lingle joined Hawaiian Airlines leaders and employees at a luncheon to commemorate the company's 80th anniversary. "Eighty years in this particular business is quite remarkable, especially under the circumstances under which they have operated," Governor Lingle said.

Governor Lingle recognized individuals and organizations who work to make life better for Hawai`i's children during a luncheon at Washington Place. "It is important to pause and recognize those who go above and beyond, especially in times that are so challenging as these, to recognize people who, even in tough times, found a way to help others," Governor Lingle said.
Building a Clean Energy Future
Governor Lingle announced the state is making significant progress in the development of an undersea cable that would connect the islands into one electrical grid, allowing the integration of wind power generated in Maui County to be transmitted to O`ahu. This milestone comes one year after a comprehensive energy agreement was signed between the State of Hawai`i and Hawaiian Electric companies to move the state away from its dependence on fossil fuels for electricity and ground transportation.
