"Around the globe, the economy is dominating public dialogue.  Despite negative signs in the U.S. and global economies, an accurate perspective of Hawai`i's economy shows that it is continuing to grow, but at a more moderate pace.

I believe we have many reasons to be optimistic about the future, specifically our state's proactive, long-term approach to transforming our economy away from an over-reliance on land development, and focusing on the innovative capacity of our people.

Now is the time for creative, strategic and long-term investment in our state.  Hawai`i will continue to invest in our airports, harbors and highways; enhance support for small businesses; develop energy independence; and pursue other special projects to bolster the local economy.

You will hear more about our stable and healthy economy in the coming weeks and months.  I urge you to learn the reasons for my optimism by visiting my website at www.hawaii.gov/gov/economy."
