As the New Year gets underway, I am excited by both the challenges and the opportunities that we face.

Throughout 2009, Hawai`i residents will commemorate a milestone event in our state's history – 50 years of statehood.  The 50th anniversary of Hawai`i's admission to the United States serves as a reminder of our rich cultural history and paints a unique picture into the future.

Fifty years ago, the people of Hawai`i worked together to achieve a common goal, and their success led to our progress as a state.

Similarly, my Administration is working together today with the legislature, counties and the private sector to tackle the unprecedented economic challenges facing our residents and businesses.

Working together with a collective sense of responsibility, we will achieve a brighter future for all, strengthen and transform our economy and ensure our state remains a global leader for the next 50 years.
