The Asagi Hatchery is a family-run business that dates back to 1935. The hatchery is currently located in Kalihi where they hatch out chicks for backyard enthusiasts and to export the egg-layers to other Pacific Islands. Asagi's is the only poultry hatchery in Hawaii.
Lisa and Maxie Asagi brought a basketful of day-old chicks that will grow out to be large Cornish Rock Cross chickens, which are said to make great pets. The resurgence in backyard raised poultry may be due to residents trying to be more self-sustaining and raising egg-layers to supplement their food budgets. The proficient egg-layers are the Rhode Island Reds and Browns (so called because they lay brown eggs).
In addition, more residents are becoming enthusiasts of the fancy heritage breeds for show. Some of the heritage breeds are endangered and breeding has helped to keep those breeds continuing. The most popular heritage breed is the Araucanas, which lay blue eggs!
