Big Island tropical fruit growers Richard and Jenny Johnson from Onomea Farms bring a load of their special tropical fruits to the KITV studios.

 Onomea - Richard & Jenny
Richard and Jenny Johnson moved to the Big Island in 2000 after they retired and started Onomea Farms on the Hamakua Coast.  Since then, their daughter Mica, her husband, Jeremy and their son, Hunter make up this true family farm.

The Johnsons started with one nine-acre "makule" farm and now have three farms, including a 15-acre and 18-acre farm in the Hamakua area.

They grow a variety of tropical fruits, including lichee, longan, starfruit, mangosteen, rambutan and hearts of palm.

Onomea - Mahea tasting
Mahealani Richardson takes a bite of the extraordinarily sweet "white pineapple."

Onomea Farms is part of a co-op of farmers in the Hamakua area.  Some of their fruits are shipped to Honolulu through a wholesaler and also exported out of the state.  Their fruits may also be found at local farmers' markets.
