The land in Kualapu΄u, Moloka΄i, was first chosen as an ideal site for growing Arabica coffee in the 1980s. The area, noted for its red volcanic soil, was developed for coffee agriculture over the years and was recently revived in 2004. After cleaning and repairing the fields and rehiring employees who had been laid off, the company celebrated its first harvest in 2006.

The 500-acre plantation produces 100% Molokai-grown Arabica coffee, including its brands: “Moloka΄i Muleskinner Coffee”, “Malulani Estate”, “Hawaiian Espresso – Moloka΄i Style and “Moloka΄i Island Princess”.

Coffee cupper Erna Knutsen of the San Francisco-based Knutsen Coffee, Ltd., comments, “In the end, what is most important is the way the coffee tastes in the cup, and the quality and flavor that Moloka΄i coffee has makes selling this fine coffee a true pleasure.”

A variety of tours are available, including a morning espresso tour, a mule-drawn wagon tour and afternoon hiking adventures. The plantation includes an espresso bar and café as well as a gift shop, which offers original artwork and crafts made by Moloka΄i artisans.

Coffees of Hawaii’s products are available directly through its website at www.coffeesofhawaii.com, at the plantation, or at the Maui Tropical Plantation located in Waikapu, Maui.
