Protecting Hawaii from Invasive Species
HDOA inspectors conduct special inspections to find out what plants are more likely to have hitchhiking pests and what areas are more likely pathways.
Everyday of every year, HDOA's Plant Quarantine inspectors and technicians work to inspect incoming cargo for pests that may hitchhike to Hawai`i.
In Fiscal Year 2007, there were more than 38,500 airline and ship arrivals in Hawai`i, bringing in more than 15 million pieces of baggage, cargo and mail parcels and 6.7 million passengers.
To utilize HDOA's limited resources, Plant Quarantine inspectors target high-risk cargo and pathways to try to intercept pests.
