Respiratory infections are common in adults and children. Most are fairly mild, self- limiting and confined to the upper respiratory tract. Many respiratory infections are caused by viruses, although a few may be caused by bacteria. Without adequate testing, it is difficult to determine the source of the infection, as many viruses can present similarly.
Although most respiratory infections are fairly mild, in some instances, they can cause more severe disease requiring hospitalization, and in rare instances, death. The likelihood of severe outcomes is greater for immunologically vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and persons with underlying medical conditions.
