Money
Management
- Not paying bills on
time?
- Unable to balance checkbook?
- Not able to account
for your spending?
- Having difficulty budgeting
your money so that there is enough to last you to the end of the month to
pay for: food, shelter, transportation or medical care?
The following
options are not endorsed by our office, but simply optons for you to consider
in your attempts to manage your personal finances.
Option #1:
Understanding Your Checking Account: (a) here is an on-line tutorial that takes
you through the steps of using a checking account http://ww.aboutchecking.com;
(b) here is some good information to be aware of in setting up a checking account
at the Consumer
@ction website.
Option #2:
there is an on-line course on Money Management to assist you to manage your
money by yourself. It teaches you about some basic principles and provides you
with the opportunity to develop skills to better manage your money. Visit the
Money 2000 Program website.
"Take Charge of Your Money"
provides instructions for watching the eight televised 55 minute presentations.
A schedule of
the 2005 program is also provided. From their on-line resources you can also
link to "Money Ed"
an on-line project which you can access from your internet connected computer,
to improve your financial well-being.
Option #3:
If you cannot afford to pay for money management assistance and would appreciate
some helpful tips, here's a great comprehensive website at Changing
Your Life Through Better Money Management. There are alot of resources here
but you need to click to other pages in this "deep" site to get at
it, so don't give up because you don't find what you are looking for on the
first few pages. If you don't have the patience, check out the worksheets/tips
section as I found it very informative and useful. You can also work with a
friend to assist you to get what you need from this site.
Option #4:
surfing the internet, you will find tools or aides to assist you to manage your
own money by yourself. We have listed some of them below:
Option #5: When
people with disabilities need help managing their budget and are not able to
learn or use budgeting skills, consider appointing a “representative payee”
to help you manage your benefits. This means that your representative payee
will be receiving your benefits check and he or she is to take responsibility
to make sure that this money is being spent for your benefit and well-being.
Generally, balancing your
personal budget means your income (i.e. your benefits check) goes to pay for
fixed spending items and the rest of the money can be use by you for spending
on discretionary items (based on your preferences or wishes) or put into your
savings account (for future use). The following is a sample:

Who can
be your Representative Payee?
- A willing family member
or trusted friend: you should think of someone whom you trust, who knows your
situation, who knows what is important to you and who has the organizational
and financial skills to manage your money. This individual may volunteer to
do this service for you free of charge or may do so for a fee.
- If you cannot find a
willing trusted family member or friend to be your representative payee, the
following are lists of possible representative payee providers or debt consultants
in your communities you might consider contacting:

#6: For the “technical minded”, there are “free” software programs
you might want to download off the internet, to help you budget your money and
perform other financial related services for yourself. These programs don't
do the bookeeping for you, you must insert the data yourself and continuously
update your records. If anything, these programs help you stay "on top" of your
finanical situation.
Check the
specifications as to whether the software is compatible with your computer and
whether your computer has enough power and memory to run the program.
|
Some free Software |
Website
Address |
| “AceMoney
Lite” version 3.7: is a free personal-finance manager. It helps to organize
and manage personal finances quickly and easily. It supports all features
required for home or even small-business accounting needs including tracking
your spending habits and seeing where the money goes, creating and managing
budgets, doing online banking, doing financial math analysis in multiple
currencies, protecting passwords, scheduling backups, monitoring 401(k)s
and stocks, and performing many other functions without the user needing
any experience in accounting. |
http://www.download.com/3000-2057-10208687.html |
There are various
website offering free software. This is one of the more reputable sites:
Make sure
the software is free and not being provided on a "trial basis". Be aware that
software available on a “trial basis” means you will be billed for the software
after the specified trial period has ended. It is very easy to forget about
the due date and find yourself being billed for the item! So before downloading
trial software, find out from the website how you will be notifying the company
and when you will be notifying them -- if you decide not to purchase the software
just in case you decide you don’t want it. Do not assume that by simply "deleting"
it from your computer, you are free of that responsibility.
Before purchasing
any software, ask other users with disabilities about their experiences with
it as well as contact “techies” you know as to the program's advantages and
disadvantages.
Option #7:
if interactive on-line services (Option #1) don’t work well for you and you
need that “one-on-one personal touch” of an instructor, there may be community
organizations or businesses that offer training in money management:
