TB clearance for new school entry is now available to students for
the 2002 school year through the Department of Health (DOH). The DOH
encourages students to get tested early and avoid the summer rush.
According to state law, students must obtain a one-time TB clearance
before first entrance into Hawaii school systems. The clearance must be
received within one year of first entry into preschool or kindergarten
through twelfth grade, and first entry into post-secondary schools.
Tuberculosis clearance can be obtained by taking a TB skin test. TB
tests are free through the DOH TB Control Program and Public Health
Nursing Clinics.
The TB Program headquarters have moved temporarily from Lanakila
Health Center to Dillingham Shopping Plaza in Kalihi. TB skin tests are
administered there on Monday through Wednesday and Fridays. No
appointment is needed.
The public is also encouraged to use other Public Health Nursing
Clinics, such as Diamond Head Health Center or Leeward Health Center,
for tuberculosis skin tests. A complete list of clinic locations and
hours is available on the web at www.hawaii.gov/doh/resource/comm_dis/tb/location.htm.
For more information about TB clearance requirements for students,
call the TB Control Program at 832-5731.
