Department of Health to Distribute Nasal Flu Spray to Physicians

HONOLULU - The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) today announced that it will supply 5,000 doses of the nasal flu vaccine, known as "FluMist," at no cost to interested Hawaii physicians. Requests from doctors will be filled in the order in which they are received.

"FluMist" is a "weakened" live influenza vaccine that is only approved for healthy individuals between 5 and 49 years of age. People at high risk for developing complications from flu should not receive "FluMist." Healthy people aged 5-49 years who are interested in receiving the nasal flu vaccine should call their doctor or clinic to see if "FluMist" is available. They may also visit www.FluMist.com to locate a provider in their area.

People at high risk of hospitalization or death from influenza should get a flu shot. High risk include individuals who are aged 6-23 months, 65 years of age or older, are pregnant, have chronic health problems. High risk individuals should call their doctor for a referral.

"While we can’t say yet if Hawaii will have a bad flu season, we want to do everything possible to ensure that our community is protected," said Linda Rosen, M.D., Deputy Director of Health. "If you’re a healthy person and were not able to get a flu shot because of the limited availability, the nasal vaccine is a viable alternative."

Health officials also want to remind the public that practicing good respiratory etiquette can help protect against influenza:

  • Stay home if you’re sick -- away from others that could become infected
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

Also, getting plenty of rest, eating nutritious food and limiting the intake of alcohol can strengthen the immune system and help keep you healthy.
