Honolulu - Rupert R. Goetz, M.D., has taken the helm as Medical
Director for the Hawaii State Hospital (HSH). In his new role, Goetz
will be responsible for ensuring clients at the state’s public
psychiatric facility receive effective, quality clinical services.
"It is a critically important assignment since the Medical Director
oversees more than seventy percent of state hospital staff," said Paul
A. Guggenheim, Administrator of Hawaii State Hospital. Areas of
expertise under Goetz’s supervision include: psychiatry,
psychology, rehabilitation, social services, medical services,
neuropsychology and clinical dietary services.
A board certified psychiatrist and family practitioner, Goetz is the
former Medical Director of Oregon’s Clackamas County Mental
Health Center and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health
Sciences University.
Goetz is also the former Medical Director of the Office of Mental
Health Services, Mental Health and Disabilities Services Division,
State of Oregon; Chief Medical Officer for the Eastern Oregon
Psychiatric Center; Director of Managed Care (Dept. of Psychiatry),
Acute Ambulatory Psychiatry and Psychiatric Emergency Services for the
Oregon Health Sciences University; private practice; emergency room
physician; and consultant.
He has been active with the National Association of Mental Health
Program Directors, serving on the Medical Directors’ Council and
as Chief Editor for publications focusing on reducing the use of
seclusion and restraint.
"Dr. Goetz brings a wealth of experience to this position,"
Guggenheim said. "It is a real pleasure to have him joining the staff
of Hawaii State Hospital."
Goetz’s appointment is the capstone of other recent major
clinical appointments at HSH including:
Dr. Kim Meyer, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who was recently named
HSH’s Chief of Rehabilitation;
