KONA - The Department of Health (DOH) has filed a Complaint and
Order against the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS),
at its Kona Maintenance Baseyard on Naapoopoo Road, Captain Cook (Kona
Baseyard) for violations of the state’s hazardous waste
rules.
DOH, Solid & Hazardous Waste Branch conducted an inspection at
the DAGS Kona Baseyard on August 21, 2002. DOH alleges that the Kona
Baseyard stored and treated hazardous waste paints and paint thinners
without a permit. DOH has also cited the Kona Baseyard for alleged
mismanagement of hazardous waste paint and paint thinner containers,
failure to properly label these waste containers and failure to make a
hazardous waste determination.
DOH has assessed a penalty of $47,500 and has ordered DAGS to comply
with state hazardous waste rules.
