DAGS Penalized for Hazardous Waste Violations

KONA - The Department of Health (DOH) has filed a Complaint and Order against the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS), at its Kona Maintenance Baseyard on Naapoopoo Road, Captain Cook (Kona Baseyard) for violations of the state’s hazardous waste rules.

DOH, Solid & Hazardous Waste Branch conducted an inspection at the DAGS Kona Baseyard on August 21, 2002. DOH alleges that the Kona Baseyard stored and treated hazardous waste paints and paint thinners without a permit. DOH has also cited the Kona Baseyard for alleged mismanagement of hazardous waste paint and paint thinner containers, failure to properly label these waste containers and failure to make a hazardous waste determination.

DOH has assessed a penalty of $47,500 and has ordered DAGS to comply with state hazardous waste rules.
