WHAT: To kick off National SAFE
KIDS Week 2003 (May 3-10), the KIPC/SAFE KIDS
Hawai`i will host a free interactive safety fair in celebration
of SAFE KEIKI Day in Hawai`i. The
event will provide parents, caregivers and children the opportunity to
learn more about injury prevention and how to reduce risks of injury
from hazards that are commonly overlooked through interactive displays
and games at various safety stations.
WHO: Keiki Injury Prevention
Coalition (KIPC)/SAFE KIDS Hawai`i, Toys R Us, Department of Health,
American Medical Response, Brain Injury Association, Hawaii Poison
Center, Honolulu Fire Department, Junior League, Kapiolani Medical
Center for Women and Children, Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services and
Emergency Medical Services, City and County of Honolulu, Shriners'
Hospital for Children, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
WHY:Despite a dramatic decline in
the unintentional childhood death rate, preventable injuries are still
the number one killer of kids. Through public awareness activities like
National SAFE KIDS Week, the Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition/SAFE
KIDS Hawai`i seeks to educate parents about these potential risks to
children.
KIPC/SAFE KIDS Hawai`i is part of the National SAFE KIDS
Campaign, the first and only national non-profit organization dedicated
solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury—the
number one killer of children age 14 and under. The Campaign is made up
of more than 300 state and local SAFE KIDS coalitions in all 50 states,
the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
