Global Public Health Conference at Hawaii Convention Center June 4 - 6, 2003

Honolulu - The Global Public Health Conference, being held June 4, 5, and 6 at the Hawaii Convention Center, will bring together health care professionals, community activists and public health specialists to discuss today’s most urgent public health concerns. This year’s gathering will focus on issues that particularly affect Hawaii and the Pacific. The Hawaii Public Health Association (HPHA) is organizing this conference, with support from local and national health-based agencies and organizations.

"We hope that this Conference will enable Pacific public health advocates to become a more knowledgeable and visible force in global public health issues," said Pratisha Budhiraja, President of HPHA.

Highlights of the Global Public Health Conference include:

  • Keynote speaker Kekuni Blaisdell, M.D., local physician and advocate for the health and well-being of members of Hawaii’s indigenous population
  • Keynote speaker Father Fran Hezel, a Jesuit priest and Director of Micronesian Seminar, a research and education institute located in Pohnpei
  • The return by "popular demand" of Dr. Finau Setaleki of the Fiji School of Medicine who will present a workshop on Pacific traditional medicine
  • Hawaii state Director of Health, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, who will present a panel on current public health issue(s) in Hawaii
  • A presentation of "Heart of the Sea," a film profiling the late local surfer Rell Sunn, on Wednesday, June 4
  • Additional presentations public health issues such as: SARS, sexual health, HIV/AIDS, bioterrorism, public health policy, environmental health, and culture and health
  • Opportunities at the conference to interview keynote speakers and other session/workshop presenters
