Recycling Challenge 2003: 19th Annual Aluminum Recycling Contest Results

HONOLULU - Congratulations to the students, parents, guardians and teachers of schools who participated in the Department of Health’s 2003 School Recycling Challenge. For the third straight year, over 1,800,000 aluminum cans were collected! Over 21,000 students representing fifty-nine schools participated. That’s more than 1.5 cans for every resident in Hawai’i!

The Hawai`i State Department of Health (DOH) partnered with Reynolds Recycling Network located in Aiea to promote school collection programs as one effective way to reduce waste, learn how to protect the environment, and raise funds for school programs.

The 2003 winning schools on Oahu are:

Pearl Ridge Elementary 249 Large Category - 1st place
Mililani Uka Elementary 113 Large Category - 2nd place
Mililani Mauka Elementary 112 Large Category - 3rd place
Moanalua Elementary 96 Large Category - Honorable Mention
Pearl City Highlands Elementary 314 Medium Category - 1st place
Ali’i’olani Elementary 184 Medium Category - 2nd place
Manoa Elementary 126 Medium Category - 3rd place
Messiah Lutheran 230 Small Category - 1st place
St. Michael’s School 167 Small Category - 2nd place
Wailupe Valley School 110 Small Category - 3rd place

Top performers in the neighbor islands included Honaunau School (105 cans per student), Kua’o Ka La (776 cans per student), Kilauea School (86 cans per student), Koloa School (103 cans per student) and St. Theresa School (612 cans per student).
