Parents Play Key Role in Keeping Children Drug Free

HONOLULU— Parents are the most powerful influence on their children when it comes to preventing drug use, according to a national survey on drug use and health. The study finds that young people, who think their parents would disapprove of their using marijuana, are five times less likely to smoke the illegal drug.

Programs like the Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration’s (SAMHSA) and the National PTA’s "Parent Involvement Month" are good examples of parents taking a proactive role in helping their children make healthy life choices. Information about these activities as well as the resources listed below can be found at the SAMHSA website at http://family.samhsa.gov.

  • A Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free
  • Rules for Your Children About Alcohol, Tobacco & Illegal Drugs
  • Teaching Assertiveness
  • The Latest on Inhalants

The materials provide clear facts about drugs, practical advice on talking with young people and ways to help prevent them from using controlled substances.

Additional online resources, including new marijuana information, are available on the Media Campaign's Web site for parents, www.Freevibe.com; for educators, www.TeachersGuide.org; for entertainment writers, www.DrugStory.org; and for corporate partners, www.TheAntiDrug.com/atwork.
