HONOLULU – Some of Hawai`i’s homeless population that
suffer from severe and persistent mental illness will have an
opportunity to rent a home after today’s opening of the DOH Hale
Ulu Pono at Barbers Point. This unique housing unit will provide
residents access to a variety of services.
Residents of the program will have access to:
- Housing and supports provided, i.e., life skills classes, in vivo
training and activities for those requesting assistance;
- Case Management tailored to their needs;
- Psychosocial Rehabilitation services and jobs, i.e., proposed Kau
Kau II and the Sundry shop managed/operated by consumers;
- Substance abuse treatment;
- Crisis Services.
The opening of Hale Ulu Pono represents a multi-agency collaborative
effort. The DOH has partnered with the Barbers Point Redevelopment
Commission (BRAC), the Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii
(HCDCH), the City and County of Honolulu, and the State’s Policy
Academy.
DOH and Steadfast Housing Development Corporation have endeavored to
develop housing and employment services over the last decade. They have
brought in over $20 million to the state of Hawai`i for housing
assistance. Most recently, the Supported Housing Bridge Subsidy Program
was recognized for being a national best practice.
