HONOLULU - The Department of Health has filed a complaint and order against United States Navy, Navy Region Hawaii for three violations of the state's hazardous waste rules.
Navy Region Hawaii is a large quantity generator of hazardous waste and was cited for:
- Disposing of hazardous waste paint thinner containing methyl ethyl ketone and hazardous waste contaminated air vent filters in the trash;
- Mismanaging the satellite accumulation requirements at the Environmental Lab, the Fuels Lab and the Afloat Training Group areas; and
- Failing to make a hazardous waste determination for the hazardous waste paint related materials and hazardous waste laboratory chemicals identified in the prior counts.
Navy Region Hawaii faces a penalty of $81,600.
In addition to paying the penalties, the facility has been ordered to comply with state hazardous waste rules for the cited violations.
The facility has twenty days to respond to the order.
