Proclamation
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990 to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawai'i affirms that the principles of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities as an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawai'i supports an ADA Coordinator/Equal Opportunity Officer in the Department of Human Resources, and an ADA Specialist in the Department of Parks and Recreation who work closely with the Mayor's Committee on People with Disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawai'i has established a partnership with he Hawai'i Centers for Independent Living and the ARC of Hilo in the development and operations of the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC); and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawai'i works with numerous organizations in the Hawai'i County with constituenst and communities to bring forth the promise of hope and freedom that is envisioned by the passage of the ADA; and
WHEREAS, July 26, 2010 celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BILLY KENOI, Mayor of the County of Hawai'i, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2010, as
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT AWARENESS DAY
in the County of Hawai'i and encourage all citizens to affirm the principles of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities in order to bring forth the promise of hope and freedom that is the right of every American.
