The Kauai District Health Office
Bioterrorism Preparedness Program has designated staff for county-wide
planning, epidemiologic investigations, and education on bioterrorism. Although the risk of a deadly outbreak is
unknown, technology has changed the way diseases spread and have an impact on
our lives. An epidemic halfway around
the world could have repercussions on Kauai.
In addition, biological and chemical weapons have been used historically
to intentionally cause harm on a population.
The agents of concern include smallpox, anthrax, plague, and ricin. The Bioterrorism
Preparedness Program has informational materials, regarding chemical and
biological agents, including how to protect yourself. Staff are also available to give
presentations to community groups upon request. To arrange for a presentation, click here.
