2007 DISABILITY ACCESS CONFERENCE
Design for All
September 6, 2007
Ala Moana Hotel
Honolulu, Hawaii
CALL FOR ENTRIES
The Disability and Communication Access Board announces the first “Accessible Design Awards”. The goal of the award is to recognize buildings, facilities and sites that are not only accessible but also aesthetic, functional and that enhances the entire user experience. We are looking for examples of successful and exemplary projects that not only comply with accessibility codes, but are “designed for all”, and not just for persons with disabilities. Award recipients will be honored and recognized at the 2007 Disability Access Conference Luncheon on September 6, 2007 at the Ala Moana Hotel.
This juried program is seeking submittals that are examples of creative and innovative designs that are accessible to all. Projects will be judged in three categories:
• Public Design (Non-residential)
• Private Design (Non-Residential)
• Residential Design (Public or Private)
ELIGIBILITY:
The awards program is open to all individuals and firms whose project was substantially complete within a year of and prior to the submittal deadline of June 15, 2007. The submitted entries must be located within the State of Hawaii and must comply with all applicable building and accessibility codes. Projects may be either new construction or alterations. Entrants may not be any member of this year’s jury or employees of their respective firms.
ENTRY FEE:
No entry fee. If submittals are to be mailed, the entrant of the submittal must pay all postage costs. The Disability and Communication Access Board will not be responsible for any damages the submittal may incur while in transit.
SUBMITTAL DEADLINE:
The deadline for completed entries is June 15, 2007. Entries must be received by 4:00 p.m., no exceptions. Award recipients will be notified by phone no later than July 31, 2007. (All entrants will be notified by mail of the juries decision.) Awards will be given out at a recognition luncheon at the ‘2007 Disability Access Conference: Design for All’, to be held on September 6, 2007 at the Ala Moana Hotel.
All entries will become the property of the Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB); they will not be returned. DCAB reserves the right to use the materials in future DCAB events, presentations, exhibits or trainings.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
• How well the project met it’s program requirements
• Functionality
• Design Aesthetics
JURY:
Judging will be conducted by the Standing Committee on Facility Access of the Disability & Communication Access Board (DCAB). Members of the DCAB Board are volunteers who are appointed by the Governor and include individuals from all the State Counties, design and business professionals, and individuals with disabilities. The jury may select to visit any project during the judging period.
SUBMITTAL FORMAT:
Each submittal shall include:
• Entry Form
• Written Narrative
• One (1) Presentation Board
The completed entry form shall accompany each submittal and shall not be attached to the narrative or presentation boards. Each entry will be given an identification number which will be used to identify the submittal during judging.
Entrants may submit more than one project. Each project must be packaged and submitted separately as individual entries. A separate entry form, written narrative and presentation board must be submitted for each project entry.
Written Narrative:
An 8-1/2” x 11” format project description and narrative shall be submitted. The narrative shall explain the program or design criteria, how the design met those criteria and any other significant information relative to the design and accessibility. Narratives shall not include the name of the developer or owner, nor shall it identify the designer or design firm in any way. Narratives shall be placed in a sealed envelope attached to the back of the presentation board.
