Ka Iwi Scenic Shoreline

Improvements Phase I, Increment 2

Department of Land and Natural Resources - Division of State Parks

KN Consulting Services, Inc.

A major focus of the project was to enhance the visual characteristics and preserve the natural features of the site while retaining the scenic vistas. This lookout gives sightseers easy access to one of the most spectacular views of the Windward Coast, from Waimanalo to the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station on the Mokapu Peninsula. This project was an excellent example of how accessible features blended seamlessly with the design, providing access to all visitors.

Project objectives included:

• An upper parking lot that was designed to accommodate 20 automobile stalls, a space for oversize vehicles, bike racks for short-term visitors, and accessible parking.

• To restore the natural vistas, overhead utility lines were moved underground along the Kalanianaole Highway as it passes through the Kealakipapa Valley.

• Landscape improvements include salt-tolerant, drought resistive native Hawaiian and locally grown species that are wind-tolerant and low maintenance.
