2008
ACCESSIBLE DESIGN AWARDS PROGRAM
The Disability and Communication Access
Board announces the 2008 “Accessible Design Awards.” The goal of the award
program is to recognize buildings, facilities and sites that are not only
accessible but also aesthetic, functional and that enhances the entire user
experience.
We are currently looking for examples of
creative and exemplary design from design professionals that not only comply
with accessibility codes, but are “Designed for All”. Projects will be judged in three
categories:
•
Public Design (Non-residential)
•
Private Design (Non-Residential)
•
Residential Design (Public or Private)
Award recipients will be honored and
recognized at the 2008 Disability Access Conference Luncheon on October 16,
2008 at the Ala Moana Hotel.
ELIGIBILITY:
The awards program is open to all
individuals/firms whose project was substantially complete within five years
prior to the submittal deadline of July 30, 2008. The submitted entries must be
located within the State of Hawaii and must comply with all applicable building
and accessibility codes. Projects may be either new construction or
alterations. Entrants may not be any member of this year’s jury or employees of
their respective firms. Previous “Accessibility Design Awards” winning projects
are not eligible to enter.
ENTRY FEE:
No entry fee. If submittals are mailed,
the entrant of the submittal must pay all postage costs. The Disability and
Communication Access Board will not be responsible for any damages the
submittal may incur while in transit.
SUBMITTAL DEADLINE:
The deadline for completed entries is
July 30, 2008. Entries must be received by 4:00 p.m., no exceptions. Award
recipients will be notified by phone no later than September 1, 2008.
All entries will become the property of
the Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB); they will not be
returned. DCAB reserves the right
to use the materials in future DCAB events, presentations, exhibits or
trainings. The award winners will also be featured on the Disability and
Communication Access Board website.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Project entries will be judged on the
following criteria:
• Program/Design Criteria achieved
• Functionality
• Design Aesthetics
• Accessibility Compliance
JURY:
Judging will be conducted by the Standing
Committee on Facility Access of the Disability and Communication Access Board
(DCAB). The jury may select to
visit any project during the judging period.
SUBMITTAL FORMAT:
Each submittal shall include:
• Entry Form
• Written Narrative
• One - Two (1-2) Presentation Board(s)
The completed entry form shall accompany
each submittal and shall not be attached to the narrative or presentation
boards. Each entry will be given
an identification number which will be used to identify the submittal during
judging.
Entrants may submit more than one
project. Each project must be
packaged and submitted separately as individual entries. A separate entry form, written
narrative and presentation board must be submitted for each project entry.
Written
Narrative:
One (1) page, 8-1/2” x 11” format,
project description and narrative shall be submitted. The narrative shall explain the program or design criteria,
how the design met the program requirements and any other significant
information relative to the design and accessibility. Narratives shall not
include the name of the developer or owner, nor shall it identify the designer
or design firm in any way.
Narratives shall be placed in a sealed envelope attached to the back of
the presentation board. The outside of the envelope shall include the name of
the project only; no other identifying information shall be included.
Presentation
Boards:
One - Two (1-2) 30” x 42” Presentation
quality board(s) must be submitted. Winning entries will be publicly displayed
at the awards luncheon. (If the board is not of sufficient thickness to prevent
warping, it is recommended that it be mounted to a 3/16” thick foam core
board.) Boards submitted shall be two-dimensional; no three-dimensional models
will be accepted. On the back of the presentation board in the upper left hand
corner, the name of project shall be noted. No other identifying information shall be included.
The presentation board(s) are required to
include:
•Name of the project (Exclude name or logo identifying the
design firm and/or designer)
•Site Plan, Floor Plan or project layout
The presentation board(s) may also include:
•Drawings (Elevations, sections, etc.) that describe the project
•Renderings or Photographs of the final design (Alterations may
include photographs of the existing conditions.)
•Photographs of project models.
•Two-dimensional material or product information that specifically
address an accessibility feature or requirement. (Actual material and product
samples should not be submitted or attached to the board.)
