Housing and Housing Related Programs
Most people with disabilities and older people prefer to remain in their own homes. This can sometimes be costly, especially for those on low and fixed incomes. There are programs designed to assist home owners and renters. The following is a brief description of these programs. You can call our Helpline (808 453-6151) for additional assistance. In addition, you may call other organizations noted in the program descriptions which follow.

City & County Rental Assistance
The County governments provide the federal funded Section 8 Program for rental subsidies to be paid to landlords by income eligible families (elderly, handicapped or disabled individuals).

Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii (HCDCH)

HUD and People with Disabilities

Social Security Creates New Homeless Website
Social Security introduced a new "Service to the Homeless" website. You can access the site at http://www.ssa.gov/homelessness/.
This is a coalition of communty organizations, government offices and service utiliziers who have banded together to solve homelessnes in Hawaii. In the past, their website resource links were great and mentioned assistance regarding street outreach, immediate shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing, supportive services, homelessness prevention and links to other organizations. Oahu
- The Salvation Army - Salvation Army Family Services - Starting September 2, 2003, clients can call the Salvation Army at 845-2544 for rental assistance. To qualify for help, clients must either be homeless or have an eviction notice.
- The Giving Tree Food Pantry - all are welcome to shop at the pantry weekly at our grocery style pantry (524-9397). Applications are taken for state IDS, birth certificate finances plus at times, rental and utility help (447-5361). Job Referral and Resume Writing available as well (447-5361).
- Institute for Human Services Inc. (IHS), Peanut Butter Ministry - This organization offers assistance through meals, clothing, shelter, social work, medical, alcohol counseling and representative payee services to the homeless. Its emergency shelter focuses on providing basic needs until the client becomes self-sufficient or is placed with a specialized facility, agency, care home or transitional shelter. It has some information on low-cost apartments for rent. The are located at 546 Kaaahi Street, Honolulu. Phone: 845-7052.
- Homeless Solutions, Inc. - Offers transitional housing for the homeless. Location: 2734 South King St., Honolulu 96826. Contact: 973-0600

Economic Opportunity Inc. - County
Homeless Program - provides financial assistance to those who are homeless
or in the proces of being evicted. Helps with 1st month's rent or back rent
due, security deposit or utility bills. Contact: 249-2970.
Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program - once a year, around June, applications are accepted for a utility credit for up to $100. Contact: 249-2970.
