NEUROTRAUMA
Accessing
Key Services
Adapted from the Pennsylvania
Department of Aging
How individuals with neurotrauma
disabilities, their families and caregivers go about obtaining key services
and supports is the focus of this section. Emphasis is placed on the complementary
roles of the formal system to the family and informal caregiver.
The most important resource
for the individual with a disability is the support offered by family, friends
and neighbors referred to as "natural supports". Community and institutional
long-term care services exist to supplement and strengthen, not supplant, efforts
of informal caregivers. There are many services that have been created in attempts
to meet the physical, social, and emotional needs of the individual to enable
them to remain in the community. Dealing with any bureaucratic agency can be
frustrating at times. You should keep an informal written record, a log or diary,
for recording information you will need later on. The following suggestions
we hope will help you cut through red tape and find the assistance you need.
The following part of the
site provides an overview of key local community resources and services that
are available to assist the individual with a neurotrauma disability and their
families. Click on the titles to access these links. Not all of the services
described here will be appropriate for each individual.
