The Environmental Planning Office (EPO) provides strategic planning services for all programs under the Deputy Director for Environmental Health. These services include program evaluation and planning, land use review, legislative coordination, and information management. The EPO is also responsible for data collection and analysis, and the development of scientifically-based environmental standards. Current programs include the following:

Environmental Health Management Report

In conjunction with other EHA offices, the Environmental Planning Office develops program goals and performance indicators, coordinates with County, Federal and other State agencies, and sets standards for baseline evaluation of environmental quality.

Land Use Planning Review

Reviews new developments for potential environmental impacts, and coordinates Departmental evaluations on mitigative measures. Implements environmental policies and standards at the earliest stages of the planning process for statewide project developments. This program also coordinates requests for public records and handles other public information functions within the Department.

Environmental Geographic Information System

The EGIS is a computerized database system used for environmental planning, data analysis, and the creation of maps and reports. This program provides services to the Environmental Health Administration (EHA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EGIS is instrumental in the creation of GIS data layers from environmental monitoring results.

Legislative Coordination

Plans and coordinates environmental activities with the Legislature, including the development of legislation.

Hawaii Environmental Forum (HEF)

The HEF is an annual meeting between all branches of the Hawaii Department of Defense and the Environmental Health Administration (EHA) of the Department of Health. Additional participants often include Hawaii and regional staff of the Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA, and private contractors.

Environmental Justice

The Environmental Planning Office supports efforts toward Environmental Justice(EJ), in line with the DOH Strategic Plan first Foundation of Health Equity and the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) Plan.
