The Cosmetics and Medical Device programs endeavor to ensure that
these products are safe and effective and accurately labeled. Because
of currently diminished resources and because the majority of cosmetics
and medical devices are manufactured on the mainland and are under the
regulatory purview of their states of manufacture and the Federal Food
& Drug Administration (FDA), the Branch affords this program a
lower priority than the preceding programs.
- Routinely inspect those Hawaiian manufacturers of cosmetics and
medical devices not inspected by FDA.
- Respond to all cosmetic and medical device complaints:
1 - Serious complaints involving illness
or injury shall be investigated within 2 working days.
2 - Non-serious complaints, e.g., one involving an economic or
marketing issue, shall be investigated within 2 weeks.
- Respond immediately to suspected aects of terrorism and natural
disasters; assess and coordinate response with related agencies,
coordinate the distribution of medical supplies, initiate public
notification, and implement product recall and destruction.
- Assist FDA in the conduct of recalls, warnings and advisories.
