Wastewater Spill Monitoring

The owner or operator of a facility causing a sewage spill or discharge to state waters is required to post warning signs immediately in the areas likely affected by the spill and where public access is possible. The owner or operator must then start taking samples of the waters for testing, notify the DOH, and for spills/discharges of 1,000 gallons or more notify the news media.

High indicator bacteria tests results by themselves do not necessarily mean that human sewage is present. Bacteria test results do not by themselves lead to posting of warning signs. The DOH reviews other factors including turbidity, ocean current flow, salinity, weather conditions, visual indicators and water body history to determine when signs may be posted or taken down.
