The Indoor Air Quality Program is guided by the following program
objectives and strategies:
- Objective:
To protect and enhance indoor air quality and minimize public
exposure to indoor air pollutants.
Strategies
- Investigate public complaints of poor indoor air quality due to biological
contaminants, volatile organic compounds, noxious odors, etc., and make recommendations
to resolve problems.
- Develop and implement an indoor air quality assessment program of publicly
owned buildings to measure, analyze and evaluate exposure levels of indoor air pollutants
and determine health effects and health risks.
- Assess, develop and recommend appropriate mitigating measures towards
reducing and preventing indoor air pollutants.
- Establish and coordinate an indoor air quality assessment network of state
agencies and facility managers to identify, assess, and correct indoor air pollution
problems.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive public outreach program, providing
informational and educational materials and training on indoor air pollutants, its
health effects, health risks and techniques in exposure reduction.

Mold growth
- Objective:
Promote good indoor air quality within schools to provide a safe
and healthful educational environment.
Strategies
- Train individuals within the Department of Education on preventive
maintenance and promoting good indoor air quality.
- Implement EPA’s “Tools for Schools” program in public schools.
- Assess, develop and recommend appropriate mitigating measures toward
reducing and preventing indoor air pollutants.

An A/C intake where the surrounding areas are dirty.
- Objective:
Investigate public complaints of poor indoor air quality.
Strategies
- Administer the provisions of Chapter 321, Hawaii Revised Statutes relating
to Indoor Air Quality.
- Investigate public complaints for inadequate building ventilation, and
associated poor indoor air quality; inadequate cooling of occupied spaces; and emissions
from ventilation systems.
