NOTICE TO WWTP OPERATORS and OTHER AFFECTED PARTIES

All Board of Certification of Operating Personnel in Wastewater Treatment Plants records have been relocated to the Wastewater Branch of the Department of the Health. Please send all Board correspondence and applications to the following address for processing.

In addition, all operator training course applications for the Statewide Wastewater Operator Training Center need to be sent in care of the Wastewater Branch of the Department of Health to be processed. Oahu operator training courses will still be conducted at the Statewide Wastewater Operator Training Center. For further information or questions, please call the Wastewater Branch at telephone 586-4294 or fax 586-4300 and state which program your call is in reference to. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this transition period as records are being relocated and reorganized.

Wastewater Branch is currently working with the University of Hawaii to continue operations of the Statewide Wastewater Operator Training Center.

Purpose

The purpose of the certification program is stated in Title 11, Chapter 61. The efficient management of wastewater treatment works is an important economic asset to the public, to county and state officials and to operators. Also, effective operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment works is essential to prevent pollution of the waters of the state. Furthermore, certification of wastewater treatment works operators assures the employment of personnel competent to provide efficient and proper operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.

    Operator Certification

    The Board of Certification administers two examinations per calendar year in February and August. Applications for Wastewater Operator Certification Examinations are mailed to all county, private, and federal agencies approximately 4 to 5 months prior to the examination date.

    The next State of Hawaii Wastewater Operator Certification Examination is February 16, 2012. Exam applications must be postmarked or received by Thursday, November 10, 2011.

    The basic education and experience requirements for each grade are listed below. The application form can be downloaded from the Operator Certification section below. Additional information and qualifications are stated in Title 11, Chapter 61, Hawaii Administrative Rules (HAR).

    Renewal Application

    Renewed certificates are valid for a period of twenty-four months and expire on October 15 of even numbered years.

  • Renewal Applications received after September 20, 2010 will not be processed until the Board of Certifications next meeting scheduled on December 16, 2010.
