Surveillance Plan for West Nile Virus in Hawaii

There are 5 components to Hawaii's surveillance system.

  1. Dead Bird

  5. Humans

Infected mosquitoes are also an early indicator that WNV might be present in the islands. Currently, the Vector Control Branch has mosquito traps, like the one in the picture, set up at ports of entry on all islands. The mosquitoes caught in these traps are sorted, counted, and tested for the presence of WNV. All mosquitoes tested in Hawaii, so far, have been negative for WNV. To date all mosquito pools tested have NEGATIVE for West Nile Virus.
