a happy family
Infected mosquitoes can also bite humans and infect them with WNV. Doctors routinely test for WNV in any patients that show neurological symptoms compatible with WNV infection. Sometimes a tourist might get infected at home on the mainland and start showing symptoms while on vacation here in Hawaii. We call this an imported case of West Nile Virus. People who come in casual contact with this sick person here in Hawaii have no chance of becoming infected. To date, these imported cases are the only cases of WNV seen in Hawaii.
