What is being done in Hawaii to help prevent the introduction of WNV?

To monitor for West Nile virus, the Hawaii State Department of Health:

(mosquito control)

• Traps, identifies, and tests mosquitoes for West Nile virus
• Tracks the number of dead bird reports
• Collects certain dead birds for laboratory testing for West Nile virus
• Tests live birds caught at ports of entry for West Nile virus
• Notifies health care providers to look for and report symptoms of West Nile virus in patients
• Notifies veterinarians to look for and report horse and other animals with signs of West Nile virus
• Distributes information on the virus and how to control mosquitoes

These efforts are designed to detect the entry of West Nile virus into Hawaii as soon as possible, so that public health officials can mount a rapid response against WNV. Public health officials will alert communities about measures that they can take to control West Nile virus.
