Inclusion Project
The Inclusion Project provides support to families for the inclusion of their children with developmental delays in childcare settings such as community pre-schools, daycare centers, and family childcare programs. Children in inclusive childcare settings have opportunities to enjoy typical every-day-little-kid experiences with their peers. Assistance is available to families to help them identify and choose appropriate childcare settings. In collaboration with the Department of Human Services, federal funding may also be available to pay for some or all of the childcare costs. Training and technical assistance on how to teach and care for children with special needs is also available to childcare providers and preschool teachers. For more information, call 808-594-0022.
Keiki Care Project
Keiki Care is a statewide, collaborative project of EIS and the Hawaii Department of Human Services. Keiki Care provides training, technical assistance, and support for children from 3 to 5 years of age with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges who are enrolled in preschools, family childcare homes, and other "community-based" early childhood programs. The project actively cooperates in statewide efforts to identify and enhance service options that include assisting families and early childhood professionals in accessing resource and support networks as well as adapting teaching strategies and learning environments to maximize the potential of the children. For more information, please call 808-594-0065.
Keiki Tech
Assistive technology services are provided through Keiki Tech. Keiki Tech utilizes a range of low and high assistive technologies to enhance the development of children with developmental delays. Keiki Tech staff will demonstrate and recommend assistive technologies that are appropriate for the particular goals of the child and family. A lending library is available for families and staff to borrow various assistive technologies that include adapted books, communication aids, adapted toys, access tools, and computer software. Keiki Tech (or assistive technology) is a service that is included in both Parts B and C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). For more information, please call 808-594-0048.
Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHSP) helps families arrange follow-up audiological evaluations for babies who do not pass hearing screening and for children under three years of age who may have developed a permanent hearing loss after birth. If a permanent hearing loss is diagnosed, NHSP assists families in obtaining early intervention services such as speech therapy. NHSP also coordinates all statewide hospital screening efforts and maintains statewide records about hearing screening results. State law requires that all babies born in Hawaii receive hearing screening soon after birth, unless testing conflicts with the family's religious beliefs.
Respite Program
The Respite Program provides relief from caregiving by providing funds for respite care for families who have ongoing caregiving responsibilities for a child with special needs. Respite provides families the relief they need to avoid burnout. Respite care can occur in or out of the home depending on the families' needs. Any opportunity that ensures that a child is taken care of while the parent takes a break is considered respite. Families are encouraged to find and train their own respite care provider. Eligibility requirements apply. Program is also dependent on the availability of state funding and is non-mandated. Please call H-KISS at 808-594-0066 for Oahu or 1-800-235-5477 for Neighbor Islands for more information.
