Surveillance Plan for West Nile Virus in Hawaii
There are 5 components to Hawaii's surveillance system.
- Dead Bird
- Live Bird
- Mosquito
- Equine (horses)
- Humans
Mosquito Surveillance
Infected mosquitoes are also an early indicator that WNV might be present in
the islands. Currently, the Vector Control Branch has mosquito traps, like the
one in the picture, set up at ports of entry on all islands. The mosquitoes
caught in these traps are sorted, counted, and tested for the presence of WNV.
All mosquitoes tested in Hawaii, so far, have
been negative for WNV. To learn more about mosquitoes in Hawaii, check
out the
Vector
Control Branch web site.
To date all mosquito pools tested have NEGATIVE for West Nile Virus.
