HAWAI`I BIRTH DEFECTS PROGRAM
What are birth defects?
Birth defects are abnormal conditions that happen before or at the time of birth. Some are mild - like an extra finger or toe. Some are very serious - like a heart defect. They can cause physical, mental, or medical problems. Some, like Down syndrome or sickle cell anemia, are caused by genetic factors. Others are caused by environmental hazards such as some chemicals, certain medicines, or adverse lifestyle effects such as recreational drugs, smoking, or drinking. More often, the causes of birth defects are unknown.
Birth defects are the number one cause of infant mortality in Hawaii, with over 400 fetal deaths each year. About 20% of all pregnancies result in spontaneous miscarriage and approximately 1,000 (5%) of all babies are born each year with some recognizable abnormality. Approximately 30% of all admissions to pediatric hospitals are caused by problems directly associated with birth defects.

What makes the HBDP unique?
The Program is able to identify a much higher percentage of infants and fetuses with birth defects and other problems than the only other system currently in use in the state (DOH birth and death certificates).
Collaboration With The HBDP
The HBDP is adaptable and open to discussion on collaboration with other organizations on research projects of interest to both parties.
Confidentiality
Comprehensive control procedures have been established to protect the privacy of all families, infants, physicians, and hospitals. All identifying information is kept strictly confidential, and published only in de-identified aggregate format. In addition, all HBDP staff have taken an oath of confidentiality.
