Introduction

Healthy People 2000 is a prevention initiative which presents a national strategy for significantly improving the health of the American people by the year 2000. It has created a comprehensive list of health objectives that can be used in analyzing and tracking the health care needs of the states. Healthy Hawai`i 2000 is a state level counterpart to Healthy People 2000. It focuses existing knowledge, resources, and commitment to prevent premature death, needless disease, and disability.

In November 1995, Healthy Hawai`i 2000 printed and distributed (in a white three ring binder) a compilation of "preliminary health objectives" for the state. It included an initial set of objectives and data related to them, most of which dated from 1990. One erratum in that publication should be corrected immediately: the rate of stroke deaths for Hawaiians on page 185should read30.2 per 100,000.

This update of Healthy Hawai`i 2000 objectives for the state compares current andavailable data with the baseline information and notes any trends for the 22 topic areas, as well as adds new objectives and related data in several priority areas. The Hawai`i objectives wereadapted from selected Healthy People 2000 (national) objectives for each area. Healthy Hawai`i 2000 underscores the value of data for use in policy development, decision making, program planning and evaluation.

For those who previously received the 1995 Healthy Hawai`i 2000 book, the update can be placed in the front of the book, or each section may be inserted into its matching book section. Those receiving both simultaneously can make the same choice. Some sections have added new Hawai`i objectives, some objectives have been deleted, and others have remained the same. Where possible, the latest data has been included in this update. The next few years will produce even more data that will be beneficial to the objectives now in place.

If you are receiving the update but do not have the 1995 book, or if you wish more information about the book, update or project, please contact the Healthy Hawai`i 2000 project at the Hawai`i Department of Health, Office of Planning, Policy and Program Development, 1250 Punchbowl St., Room 340, Honolulu, HI 96813, phone: 586-4190, fax: 586-4193.
