Healthy Hawaii Initiative
Though many people cite Hawaii as one of the healthiest states in the union far too many of our citizens continue to suffer needlessly from preventable health problems. Fifty percent of adults in Hawaii are over-weight or obese, close to 20 percent are smokers and 80 percent do not engage in regular exercise. To ensure that we are indeed the Health State, we have strengthened our efforts through the Healthy Hawaii Initiative to improve the overall health of residents by addressing critical risk factors of poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and tobacco use. The Health Hawaii Initiative funds social and environmental change planned and carried out by community-based organizations ranging from schools to non-profit coalitions.

Injury Prevention and Control Program (IPCP)
The Injury Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) is the focal point of the Department of Health for injury prevention statewide. It pursues its vision of “A Safe Hawai‘i… from the Mountains to the Sea” through a community-based strategy to reduce and prevent injury. The IPCP designs, implements and evaluates injury prevention programs; collects, analyzes and disseminates injury data; provides technical support and training; and develops and promotes prevention policy.

Nutrition
The functions of the Nutrition and Physical Activity Section are focused on chronic disease prevention and health promotion through good nutrition and regular physical activity.

STD/AIDS Prevention
The Branch Administration provides leadership in program assessment, development and assurance. The Administration coordinates planning and monitors HIV/AIDS services provided by DOH or through Purchase of Service contracts for both HIV prevention and care for those with HIV/AIDS.

Tobacco Prevention
The Hawaii State Department of Health's Tobacco Prevention and Education Program is the official state government program addressing tobacco control in Hawaii. It is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Comprehensive National Tobacco Control Program.
