How to Get Help for Your Child in Hawaii

The link below provides information on the roles of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division, Hawaii Families as Allies, and the Department of Education to coordinate services for your child:

The State of Hawaii provides mental health services to children and youth through a system of care that includes both school-based services provided by the Department of Education (DOE) and an array of more intensive mental health services contracted by the Department of Health (DOH) Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division (CAMHD).

Families interested in obtaining services through the DOH CAMHD should contact the Family Guidance Center (FGC) located in the school district of their home school. FGC staff will assist families with the process of determining whether their child is eligible for DOH services or whether their child can be better helped by other agencies. Eligible young people will be assigned a DOH Mental Health Care Coordinator (MHCC). The youth may, and often will, continue to receive School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) services and support from the DOE in conjunction with DOH intensive mental health services.

To accompany the family through the various steps, a Parent-Partner from the Hawaii Families as Allies (HFAA) can be arranged at the FGC.

The youth will have access to the DOE's School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) services through the DOE's Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS).

The Consumer Handbook is a useful CAMHD resource tool. It provides information about CAMHD services and the rights and responsibilities of you and your child.

Our Notice of Privacy Practices describes how medical information about you and your child may be used and disclosed. It also describes how you can get access to this information.

CAMHD Vision Statement

"Happy and Healthy Children and Families Living in Caring Communities"

CAMHD Mission

The mission of CAMHD is to provide timely and effective mental health prevention, assessment and treatment services to children and youth with emotional and behavioral challenges, and their families.

CAMHD Goals

Over the past decade, Hawaii's child and adolescent mental health system has grown in capacity to serve the thousands of children and youth with emotional and behavioral challenges. This growth has been through statewide implementation of School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) programs and in partnership with the statewide family organization, Hawaii Families As Allies.

The seven priority areas that are currently guiding CAMHD and its provider agencies in our service to Hawaii's children and youth and their families are:

  • Decrease Stigma and Increase Access to Care
  • Implement and Monitor Effectiveness of a Comprehensive Resource Management Program
  • Implement a Publicly Accountable Performance Management Program
  • Implement and Monitor a Comprehensive Practice Development Program
  • Implement and Monitor a Strategic Personnel Management Plan
  • Implement and Monitor a Strategic Financial Plan
  • Implement and Monitor a Strategic Information Technology Program
