SUMMARY

CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU (OAHU)
Total Acute Care
The occupancy rate for acute care services showed a slight increase from 63.7 percent in 1999 to 67.9 percent in 2000.  However, the Average Length of Stay (ALOS) dropped slightly from 6.5 to 6.4 days in 2000.

Medical/Surgical
For the period of January 1 through December 31, 2000, utilization in metropolitan Honolulu hospitals for medical/surgical services averaged 67.7 percent occupancy with an ALOS of 7.3 days.  Non-metropolitan or other Honolulu hospitals showed around 74.4 percent occupancy with an ALOS of 6.5 days.

Critical Care
Critial care services averaged 79.9 percent occupancy and an ALOS of 10.9 days for metropolitan Honolulu hospitals.  Other Honolulu hospitals were utilized at 69.4 percent occupancy and an ALOS of 4.7 days.

Long Term Care
Long term care facilities on Oahu reported an average of 90.1 percent occupancy with an ALOS of 209 days.

SNF
Skilled Nursing Facilites in metropolitan Honolulu were at an 89.1 percent occupancy rate compared to the non-metropolitan or other Honolulu facilities at 53.6 percent occupancy.  A new facility, Ka Punawai Ola, with 120 SNF beds opened in Kapolei and registered a 16.5 percent occupancy.

SNF/ICF
Skilled Nursing Facility/Intermediate Care Facility swing beds were occupied at 96.4 percent in metropolitan Honolulu while other Honolulu showed 95.5 percent.



HAWAII COUNTY
The occupancy rate for acute care beds increased from 54.0 to 63.1 percent in 2000.  Medical/surgical beds were utilized at 71.9 percent occupancy with an ALOS at 6.5 days.  SNF/ICF beds were utilized at 94 percent occupancy with an ALOS 263 days. 


MAUI COUNTY
Lanai Hospital converted its four (4) acute care beds to acute/SNF care beds and showed a 4.3 perceent occupancy rate with an ALOS of 2.6 days.  The occupancy rate for all acute care services remained stable at last year's 71 percent.  The long term care occupancy rate showed a slight increase from 90.8 in 1999 to 94.2 percent in 2000.


KAUAI COUNTY
Acute care bed utilization on the Garden Island averaged around 46.7 percent occupancy and an ALOS of 3.4 days.  Long term care bed utilization was roughly at 77.1 percent occupancy and an ALOS at 156 days.
