Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

The Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (HBRFSS) is part of the national Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The national BRFSS is the largest random telephone interview survey of randomly selected adult 18 years or older in household with telephone access on behaviors that directly or indirectly affect health and on other health related topics. Each participating states conduct their respective random telephone survey following the national BRFSS protocols and guidance. A national profile and participating state’s profile about the general result of BRFSS are posted on the CDC's website.

The HBRFSS has been part of the national BRFSS since 1986. In this regard, we acknowledge the persistence of survey interviewers and willing participation of the randomly selected adults year round. Without their contribution, no results would be available.

The annual statistics from HBRFSS are available for the following year 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, (2003 pdf version), 2002, (2002 pdf version), 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994;

The state of Hawaii is ethnically diverse with White (Caucasian), Hawaiian/Part Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese and Chinese comprising at least 90 percent of the state’s adult population. For stable estimate of statistics on health, health risks and health related topics by the five ethnic groups mentioned, two to three years of HBRFSS data were combined.
