Smoking and Tobacco Use in Hawaii: Facts, Figures, and Trends - Smoking and tobacco use are the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in Hawaii and the nation. Tobacco use results in the death of over 1,100 residents of Hawaii annually and costs $525 million a year in medical costs and lost productivity. The Hawaii State Department of Health is pleased to present this overview of data on smoking and tobacco use in our state. This report is a valuable resource to decision makers, programs, agencies, organizations and anyone who is interested in gaining a better perspective on the issue and identifying and defining objectives and target goals. It is our hope that this information will help us all to make great strides to reduce the burden of tobacco in Hawaii.
Smoking and Tobacco Use in Hawaii: Facts, Figures, and Trends - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY- Since 1991, the Tobacco Prevention and Education Program and the State Department of Health has developed and implemented a comprehensive program to reduce tobacco use in the State of Hawaii by preventing initiation, promoting quitting, eliminating exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and eliminating disparities related to tobacco use. A major component of a comprehensive program is surveillance and evaluation to monitor the progress towards goals. This document is an effort to summarize the available data on tobacco use and related issues in one place to provide a comprehensive look at tobacco use in Hawaii.
Clearinghouse of Tobacco Prevention Resource Materials - The Tobacco Prevention and Education Program has produced a Clearinghouse of Tobacco Prevention Resource Materials for the Hawaii community. The materials in the Clearinghouse are provided to assist the community in tobacco education. We hope to encourage more educators and community members to utilize these resources to increase awareness on tobacco. The materials available include: a video lending library, brochures, posters and promotional items and tools. There is no charge to utilize any of the materials listed, and all of the items in the catalog have been issued a code for easy ordering.

Tobacco and Alcohol Promotions in Hawaii Stores - This report contains the results of the Tobacco and Alcohol Advertising Survey (TAAS), background research on alcohol and tobacco advertising, and potential solutions in addressing its influence on youth in Hawaii.
Happy To Be Smoke Free Me!- This is the Tobacco Prevention and Education Program coloring book that can be used in the classroom for children grades K-3. This coloring book shows the activities that a child can accomplish easier then a person who smokes regularly. Some of the activities covered include running long distances, playing basketball, soccer, swimming, surfing, roller-blading, skateboarding and biking. We hope this will help your students understand the importance of identifying themselves as a non-smoker, having a strong, healthy body and that smoking hurts your lungs, muscles and stamina.

Hawaii Tobacco Laws 2007 - This brochure provides an overview of tobacco laws that affect Hawaii, including information on Hawaii state laws and regulations related to tobacco. It also describes the distribution of funds under the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The laws in this brochure are divided into the following 6 topic areas: Secondhand Smoke; Tobacco Sales; Tobacco Samples, Coupons, and Tobacco Promotional Materials; Tobacco Tax Law; Licensing and Reporting; and Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) funds. The information in this brochure is current as of March 2007.

Surveillance System Data: Below is a brief description of each survey and the kinds of information they collect.
Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (HI-BRFSS) is an annual, representative telephone health survey of Hawaii residents aged 18 years and older which includes questions about tobacco. It is part of the national BRFSS system and thus allows comparisons between Hawaii and all 49 other states, the District of Columbia, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

Hawaii Health Survey (HHS) an annual, representative survey modeled after the National Health Interview Survey. It is conducted by telephone and collects in-depth information about the adult respondent, as well as limited information about all other household members including children.
Hawaii Adult Tobacco Survey (HATS) is a periodic, representative telephone survey of Hawaii residents aged 18 years and older. The HATS collects detailed information about tobacco use, cessation attempts, secondhand smoke exposure and knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding tobacco use and policies.
Hawaii Youth Tobacco Survey (HYTS) is a bi-annual, representative, written survey of public school students grades 6 - 12. They HYTS collects information about tobacco use and access, exposure to tobacco messages and secondhand smoke, and knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding tobacco.
Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System (PRAMS) is an annual representative survey of women who give birth in Hawaii. PRAMS collects state-specific, population-based data on maternal attitudes and experiences prior to, during, and immediately following pregnancy. Tobacco use is one of the areas covered by PRAMS.
